So show me your Horses!

#96: Exceller

Exceller is most well known for beating 2 Triple Crown winners… in the same race.  He was born in Kentucky, but his racing career began in France.  At age 4 he was shipped to England and in the middle of the year was transferred to California, where his new trainer did not have high expectations for him.  In 1978 at age 5, he won 7 of 10 starts, including the Hollywood Gold Cup, the Oak Tree Invitational Stakes, and most surprisingly the Jockey Club Gold Cup where he raced against Affirmed and Seattle Slew… coming from 22 lengths behind and winning.

He is the only horse in history to beat two Triple Crown winners in the same race, and is the only one along with Noor to defeat two Triple Crown winners.

Tragically, he is also famous for his unfortunate death.  He didn’t perform at stud the way he was expected, and was sold from Gainesway Farm in Lexington to a breeder in Sweden.  Here it was discovered that he had a mysterious infection and he was removed from the stud roster immediately.  When his owner went bankrupt, he was moved to a small farm and was eventually sent to a slaughterhouse in 1997.  He is remembered now through numerous Thoroughbred rescue organizations, such as The Exceller Fund.  Sadly enough he is not the only successful racehorse to be so cruelly remembered, as 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand has since joined his devastating fate.

Exceller is in the lead.  Keep him in your thoughts :( rescue a Thoroughbred :)
